The temperature and pressure relief valve (T&P) is an important safety feature that prevents pressure from building up that could damage the water heater and even your home. Over time, corrosion can cause the T&P valve to no longer function as it should. To determine if your T&P valve is working properly, open the valve with your hand by pulling up the lever as shown in the video. When pulling up on this lever, you should hear pressure escape the valve. If it doesn’t pass that simple test, it’s time to replace the valve.
This video shows detailed step-by-step procedure for how to replace a T&P valve on a gas or electric hot water heater.
Tools you’ll need
Replacement T&P Valve
Pipe wrench or adjustable wrench
Extension or Cheater bar
Pipe sealer or Teflon Tape
Garden hose
Rags or Towels
